컴퓨터의 구조와 그 속의 언어, CODE후기/책 2020. 1. 16. 09:40
CODE: 하드웨어와 소프트웨어에 숨어 있는 언어(찰스 펫졸드, 2015)
현대적인 컴퓨터가 어떻게 만들어졌는지 기초부터 설명하는데, 그 기초가 무려 애플이나 트랜지스터, 진공관도 아닌 원소주기율표와 모스부호다. 손전등으로 옆집 친구와 신호를 주고 받는 것부터 시작해서, 점자, 모스 부호, 전신으로 넘어가 논리 게이트와 스위치를 다루고, 초보적인 덧셈기(ALU)를 통해 초보적인 컴퓨터를 만드는 과정이 굉장히 부드럽게 이어진다. 단순히 컴퓨터에 어떤 기술이 쓰였고, 그 기술은 누가 언제 만들었는지 나열했다면 이렇게 자연스럽게 이해하지는 못했을 것이다.
내가 컴퓨터를 처음 사용한 컴퓨터는 2005의 Windows XP인데, 이 책은 1999년에 처음 쓰였으니 그보다도 한참 전에 쓰여진 셈이다. 그래서 사실 이 책의 모든 내용은 내가 경험한 적 없는 내용이다. Windows XP와 C언어, Mac 같은 건 마지막 장에야 다룬다. 그래서 마치 컴퓨터가 어떻게 만들어졌는지 역사를 공부하듯 읽었는데, 아는 단어가 나오면 반갑고, 그 단어의 유래를 알게 될 때는 흩어진 지식들이 이어지는 느낌을 받았다. 어려운 부분을 힘들게 읽으면서도, 이보다 쉽게 설명할 수는 없겠다는 느낌을 받았다.
내가 읽은 컴퓨터의 역사와 작동 원리를 다룬 책 중에서 가장 추천하고 싶다.
